Celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights heroine and Virginia icon, Barbara Rose Johns

Every April, the Democratic Party of Virginia hosts a two-part event honoring the life and legacy of Barbara Johns — a free panel that is open to the public, and a fundraiser reception to close out the night. Funds raised at the reception help to fund the Democratic Party of Virginia’s efforts to elect Democrats around the commonwealth — Democrats who pass legislation protecting the right to vote and pass the most comprehensive anti-discrimination laws in the south.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were forced to move this year’s event from its usual place on the calendar to August 14th. If you were unable to attend this year’s event you can watch a recording of it below!

Our summer series, Pints on the Patio, made stops in Fredericksburg, Chester, and is coming to Norfolk this week!

Back in July, we were joined by Hala Ayala, Mark Herring, Charniele Herring, and our very own Chairwoman, Susan Swecker to kick off the series in Fredericksburg

Last week in Chester, we were joined by Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, Senator Jennifer McClellan, Delegate Dawn Adams, and House of Delegate candidates Debra Gardner, Caitlin Coakley, and Kaite Sponsler!

And this week we’re excited to be joined by Delegate Nancy Guy, Norfolk Councilwoman Andria McClellan, and House of Delegate candidates Nadarius Clark and Finale Norton!

Get your tickets here, Norfolk!

Introducing… Rylie Cooper!

Rylie is joining us as our new Deputy Digital Director.

Rylie cut their political teeth in their home state of Pennsylvania during the 2016 election organizing on Penn State’s campus for Hillary Clinton and Democrats up and down the ticket. They continued their organizing work in communities across the eastern United States including Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and most recently Virginia where they were Regional Organizing Director for Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaign. They took their organizing experience and the HTML skills they learned to build Tumblr themes in middle school, and dove right into digital work at Authentic to break fundraising records for targeted Senate races across the country in 2020. Rylie enjoys spending their time hunting for the best cheap tacos or watching reality TV with their cat, Earl Grey.
